The Rotary Club of Westerville Foundation last week awarded its first ever $10,000 college scholarship to Lindsey Hartshorn of Westerville North High School.
The Foundation’s Scholarship Committee presented Lindsay with the Rotary Club of Westerville Achievement Award and the scholarship notification Thursday, April 30 at Westerville North. Lindsay plans to attend Ohio State University this fall and pursue a career in oncology.
Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Lisa Janszen said Lindsey personifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self,” through active involvement in both school and the community. At Westerville North, Lindsey has been an exceptional student and deeply involved in extracurriculars, through both sports and theater. She also performed extensive community service in her after-school hours.
The volunteer work included involvement in many Rotary activities. In 2019 Lindsey attended RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. She this year’s president of the school’s Rotary-affiliated Interact Club, and she also volunteered with the I CAN program staged by Rotary Clubs of Westerville in the school district’s elementary schools. Lindsey also has volunteered at the Citizens for Humane Action Animal Shelter and the Central College Food Pantry.
The AP Scholar and Global Scholar, recognized for Superior Academic Achievement, also took college classes while enrolled at North, earning A’s and college credit.
In a great theater career at North, Lindsey earned accolades as Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress and the Director’s Award for Senior One Acts.
She also was a three-year member of the North soccer team, serving as captain of the JV squad her sophomore year, making varsity and receiving the coach’s Most Inspirational Award as a junior.
“In summary, Lindsey is the total package,” Janszen said. “She’s being recognized as an all-around good person who gives back to the community around her. We are proud to have Lindsey and her family affiliated with our Rotary Club of Westerville.”
Other Rotarians on the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee attending the April 30 presentation were President Tom Shaver, Dave Read, Steve Malik, Carol Groseclose and Mike Groseclose.
About the Rotary Scholarship
The Rotary Club of Westerville has awarded more than $500,000 in college scholarships to Westerville high school graduates over the past five-plus decades. The program has grown to a community tradition since the first $500 scholarship for a single student to attend nursing school at Otterbein College was awarded in 1964.
In recent years, the club has awarded three smaller, four-year college scholarships. 2020 marked the first year going to a single, large award, making it one of the largest local scholarships available to students graduating from Westerville Central, Westerville North, Westerville South, or DeSales high schools.
