For more than 25 years, members of the Rotary Club of Westerville and the Rotary Club of Westerville Sunrise have been teaching the I-CAN character education program to second-grade students in Westerville elementary schools.
Rotary volunteers reinforce the social-emotional skills important to the teachers and district counselors in a fun-filled 30-minute session, held each week for 25 weeks.
As they have done in past years, the volunteers and teachers this spring were to hold a graduation ceremony for the participating 650+ second-graders.
But unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional graduation ceremony could not be held May 4.
So the Rotary clubs’ I-CAN Committee worked with participating elementary principals to figure out a way to deliver I-CAN graduation medals and congratulatory notes to each student during the week of May 18. The delivery was timed for school-year ending visits by parents to pick up any items or materials that were left in the classroom when schools were closed in March.
