The Rotary Club of Westerville recognized its March 2021 Students of the Month during a virtual meeting March 4. Throughout the school year, from October through May, the Club honors four students from local high schools each month. Working with the school principals and counselors, one student each month is chosen from Westerville Central, Westerville North, Westerville South and St. Francis DeSales high schools. The students, their parents, and the school administrators are introduced and honored at the Rotary Club’s first weekly luncheon each month.

March 2021 honoree profiles

Westerville Central: Meagan (Maggie) Palma’s favorite subjects are English and history. The senior is the editor-in-chief of WCHS’ student newspaper and is a member of the marching band, Westerville March For Our Lives, Global Scholars and Autoimmune Hepatitis Teen Support group. She has attended two journalism camps and Buckeye Girl state. She has received the following awards and recognition: Honor roll and Student of the Month (twice). She was one of 75 students accepted into Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. She plans to study journalism with a minor in political science. “Even though I have a rare disease I try to push through and help others as much as I can. It would be a great honor to be awarded the student of the month.”

Westerville North: Autymn Briggs’ favorite subjects are science and art. The senior is involved in a number of activities including varsity track and field, varsity cheerleading, competition dance and Big/Lil sis program as a mentor. She is a National Honors Society member and serves as dance captain, female representative of Warrior Athletic Leadership Team and vice president of Leadership Council. She has also volunteered for My Very Own Blanket and W.A.R.M for the past six years. She has been recognized as a scholar athlete (four years). She plans to study psychology at Howard University, North Carolina A&T University or Delaware State University.

“I have been an assistant dance teacher at my studio (Generations Performing Arts Center) for the past 6 years and I love teaching the younger dancers new things. I really love being able to be a positive role model in all my extracurricular activities and being able to be someone others look up to.”

Westerville South: Kyla Nickerson’s favorite subjects are biology and anatomy. The senior is involved in National Honors Society, student council and Student Athletic Training and has received the following recognitions: academic letter (three years), varsity letter for softball (one year), varsity letter (three years), scholar athlete (three years). She hopes to attend Ohio State University, University of Kentucky, Kent State University, Akron University or University of Dayton. “Thank you for recognizing my hard work during an especially hard year.”

St. Francis DeSales: Lily Carlos’ favorite subject is science. The senior is a cheer captain, student ambassador, a member of the National Honors Society and a volunteer with the CHA Animal Shelter. She plans to study architecture at the University of Cincinnati.
