The Rotary Club of Westerville’s annual Rotarian of the Year Award has been renamed in honor of Past President William S. “Bill” Tompos.

As approved by the club Board of Directors and announced at the club luncheon Jan. 9, 2025, the honor henceforth will be known as the Rotary Club of Westerville’s Bill Tompos Rotarian of the Year Award.

Tompos died unexpectedly in 2023 following his usual integral contributions to the club’s big Independence Day celebration. He participated in post-event meetings even after his initial hospitalization for the illness that would take his life. He passed on July 19, 2023, at the age of 85. (See story here.)

Past President John Powell led the program announcing the renaming, at the club’s luncheon Jan. 9 at The Medallion Club.

“Bill Tompos exemplified the spirit of Rotary through his unwavering commitment to community service and leadership. A true Rotarian at heart, Bill’s contributions spanned decades and touched countless lives.,” Powell said.

According to the resolution making the change:

“Bill’s dedication was evident through his recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF), achieving PHF+4 status. This distinction reflects his remarkable support and contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Bill’s leadership roles were equally impactful. He served as Rotarian of the Year in 2005-06.  He led two clubs with distinction as President of the Whitehall/Bexley Club (1997-98) and as President of the Rotary Club of Westerville (2007-08). His legacy also includes serving as chairman of several committees, showcasing his active involvement in virtually every aspect of Rotary’s mission.

Bill’s passion for service extended far beyond titles; he was a hands-on contributor, ensuring that projects and events were successful. His leadership inspired others, and his presence in the community embodied the core values of Rotary – Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of Westerville’s Rotarian of Year Award will henceforth be named “The Bill Tompos Rotarian of the Year Award.”

The Bill Tompos Rotarian of the Year Award will go each June to the Rotary Club of Westerville member, as chosen by the outgoing president in consultation with the club board, who contributed the most to the success of the club during the preceding Rotary year.
