Rotary Food Drive for WARM

Food Drive is partnership between Rotary clubs, WARM, Kroger

The Rotary Club of Westerville annually conducts the Rotary WARM Holiday Food Drive to benefit the local food pantry of the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (WARM).

Rotary WARM

WARM Executive Director and Sunrise Rotarian Scott Marier announces the 2019 Rotary Holiday Food Drive at the Rotary Club of Westerville luncheon Nov. 7, as club President Tom Shaver looks on.

The Rotary Club of Westerville Sunrise has become a partner in this event and Kroger since its inception has been the drive’s major sponsor.

The food drive takes place in neighborhoods across Westerville. Volunteers are sought to be Team Captains, Drivers and Runners. Call WARM at 614-899-0196, ext 220 to volunteer.

Westerville Rotarians, remember: We will gather for our lunch meeting tomorrow (Sept. 12), at the Otterbein Campus Center, 100 W. Home St., 43081.
Our own Club member and Otterbein President John Comerford has made special arrangements for us to have this meeting.
Otterbein is in session so this will be a fun event with a great chance to mingle with some of the students. We’ll have a normal program, featuring speaker Lisa Bushman, owner of The Center for Counseling, Growth & Discovery.
ORDERING: When you enter the Campus Center, go up the stairs and get in line with the students. Order your lunch as you go through and pay the cashier for your meal. There is no meeting charge, only what you order for your lunch. After grabbing your lunch, proceed to Room One, which is the room on the west end of the building—the same room where we have breakfast the morning of the Fish Fry.
PARKING: at the Campus Center is generally not available. Please plan to park in the State Street lot directly across from Church the Messiah U.M., 51 N. State, and walk the couple of blocks down Home Street to the Campus Center. Consider buddying up with another Rotarian or two for travel to this unique off-site meeting!
If you need assistance in getting to the center, please email Wendell at wencaptain@msn.com and we can provide a ride if necessary.

Rotary set to stage daylong July 4 Celebration
The table is set for another great Independence Day celebration in Westerville, with a daylong slate of patriotic fun planned by the Rotary Club of Westerville for Thursday, July 4, 2019.

The Rotary organizes the community’s July Fourth celebration, and it is comprised of four main events:

• The Westerville Rotary July 4th 5K Walk/Run at Alum Creek Park North, beginning at 8 a.m.
• The Rotary Club of Westerville Independence Day Parade, starting at 1 p.m.
• The Westerville Rotary Fourth of July Festival behind Westerville South High School, featuring live entertainment, more than 10 food trucks, and free bounce houses for children, from 3-10 p.m.
• And the grand finale, the Fireworks Display at 10 p.m., simulcast to patriotic music broadcast on 104.9-FM The River.

The 5K

The daylong celebration kicks off with the Westerville Rotary July 4th 5K Walk/Run at Alum Creek Park South, 221 W. Main St.

The 5K starts at 8 a.m., with a Children’s Fun Run set for 9 a.m. and Awards Ceremony at 9:25.
Registration is now open and additional information available at westervillejulyfourth5k.com.

The 5K registration fee is $35 through June 30, then $40 July 1 through race day. Runners all receive a event shirt, goodie bag and participation medallion. Registration for the Kids’ Race is $10, and all children participating will receive a medal.

The State Street parade

A crowd of about 20,000 is expected for the Rotary Club of Westerville Independence Day Parade down State Street, starting at 1 p.m.

The parade route begins at St. Paul Catholic Church, 313 N. State St., and proceeds south to Electric Avenue, where participants will turn east on Electric Avenue to Otterbein Avenue, to destage at Westerville South High School.

Registration and Drop-Off: All floats, vehicles and parade participants must arrive
at St. Paul and be set-up between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The parade begins at 1 p.m. sharp.

“God Bless the USA” parade theme:
Lillian Young, a rising third-grader at St. Paul School, won the Rotary’s annual contest to pick the parade theme. Lillian’s entry of “God Bless the USA” was chosen from hundreds submitted by elementary school children in Westerville.
For winning the contest, Lillian won a $100 prize and was invited to ride with her family in a place of honor in the parade, aboard the Rotary Club of Westerville’s float.

Clark Kellogg is Grand Marshal
Ohio basketball great and national sports broadcaster Clark Kellogg will lead the 2019 parade as Grand Marshal.

Longtime Westerville area resident, Clark "Special K" Kellogg grew up in East Cleveland and was recruited by Ohio State University after a stellar career at Cleveland St. Joseph High School. His 51-point game in the championship against Columbus East is still an Ohio high school state finals record. From 1979 to 1982, he played for OSU, where he earned All-Big Ten and Most Valuable Player honors.

Declaring for the NBA draft after his junior year, he was the first-round pick (eighth overall) of the Indiana Pacers and was selected as a member of the NBA All-Rookie Team. Chronic knee problems cut his pro career short and forced his retirement after five years. He became a broadcaster for ESPN in 1990 then moved to CBS, where he now is employed as the network’s lead college basketball analyst.

Kellogg has two sons, Alex and Nick, and a daughter, Talisa. Nick played basketball for Ohio University and Talisa played Division I volleyball at Georgia Tech.

Westerville Rotary Fourth of July Festival
After the parade, the live entertainment festival will begin at 3 p.m., in the fields behind Westerville South High School, 303 S. Otterbein Ave.

Eleven food trucks are slated to offer attendees a wide selection of food during the festival, including the Rotary Club of Westerville’s Rotary Grill, and a three-band lineup will provide live music right up to the start of fireworks show at 10 p.m.

The Hobgoblins will take the stage first, from 3-5 p.m., followed by Jon Anthony and Wishful Drinkin’, which will perform from 5:20-7:30 p.m. The popular Beatles cover band, The British Invasion, will headline the musical entertainment, and take the stage from 8 to 10 p.m.

Between the band performances, a live DJ from 104.9 The River will be on hand, simulcasting the event on the Westerville FM station.

Visitors should be sure to get in on the Rotary’s 50-50 raffle during the festival – with the winner to be announced just before the fireworks, Various patriotic souvenirs and trinkets also will be offered for sale by the club, including glow necklaces, flashing batons and fiber optic wands.

The Fireworks
The Fireworks Display, generously underwritten by the City of Westerville, will get underway between dusk and 10 p.m., simulcast to patriotic music broadcast 104.9-FM The River.

The display is let off from Alum Creek Park South at 535 Park Meadow Road, near the city Skate Park, and will be visible at locations across Westerville. But the Rotary Club of Westerville invites residents to bring their folding chairs and join the crowd at the Festival behind Westerville South to catch the patriotic show!

Should weather prevent the fireworks show July 4, the scheduled rain date is the same time and location on Friday, July 5.
